Here’s a good article on it.

I’ve pretty much reached the point where I want to just say, seriously people, no one likes to be told their work and effort aren’t good enough or don’t matter. Genre writers get defensive and throw their sales and popularity into lit author’s faces and lit authors talk about art and quality, and really cares? Who has time to care?

It’s unfair that genre authors are lessened because they DO put a ton of hard work into their work. The idea that they don’t work hard at their craft is laughable. But so is the idea that literary work is just pretentious naval gazing. Personally, being a total genre slut (and literary is a genre) I have enjoyed books of both a character based and plot based nature.

So I’m tired of it people. It’s hard work for everyone. It’s a challenging path to publication for everyone, and everyone is worried about the business of it and the validity of it. Everyone wants to entertain people and make them think, and we all want our work to reach an audience and to be accepted as a work of merit.

So truce. Please.
