The Crow remake (Only “It’s not a remake, it’s relaunch.” ORlly? Then why are they casting for Eric Draven? Seriously, leave this one alone.)
This one I am utterly upset about: Repo Men the movie. It’s an action version of Repo: The Genetic Opera, which is a gorgeous, poignant piece of work, that sadly only has a cult following. The thing is, I would probably love this movie (it looks a lot like “The Island” as well, which I liked. What can I say, I love dark science fiction.) if I wasn’t hung up on this irritation that it’s so very close to another, overlooked movie. Now, if someone more enlightened that I (and the posters on IMDB) can tell me that both are reworkings, or that the Repo:GO people were given a nod or something then maybe I could give this one a chance. (No really, please, please, please make me feel better about this movie if you can. I want to because I do so love the concept.)

Beauty, healthy eating and good health are among the subjects that a weeklong Campus Health Services (CHS) program will explore Feb. 22-26.
Body Awarness/Body Appreciation (BABA) Week activities are designed to promote and celebrate healthy body images and to challenge media portrayals of beauty. The program will feature events, films, exhibits and discussions. Elizabeth Somer, a frequent guest on NBC’s “Today Show” and author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness,” will be among the week’s guest speakers. She will talk about how dietary changes can improve mood and energy levels.
BABA week is all about getting people to rethink attitudes toward beauty, learn to be “comfortable in their own skin” and care for their bodies, said Karen Newton, director of Health Promotion and Education for CHS.
“Every day we get a flood of media messages that tell us how we are supposed to look, act and feel. Yet these messages typically portray people in a plastic, air-brushed world of perfection that simply doesn’t exist,” she said.
Constant exposure to unrealistic body images contributes to such unhealthy behaviors as eating disorders and extreme dieting, Newton said.
BABA Week highlights include:
Jump Rope for Heart: Campus teams will compete in a competition and fitness program. Red Barn, Feb. 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
“America the Beautiful”: A film about America’s obsession with physical perfection. Multipurpose Room, Student Activities Center (SAC), Feb. 22, 7 p.m.
Health Fair: Multipurpose Room, SAC, and Red Barn, Feb. 23, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
“Do I Look Fat”: A film that focuses on seven gay men who struggle with eating disorders and body image. Multipurpose Room, SAC, Feb 23, 7 p.m.
International Tea: A discussion about cultural perspectives on beauty. Cultural Center, Feb. 24, noon-1 p.m.
“The Century Project”: A traveling exhibit of highly personal statements and nude photos of “real women” that serves as a platform to address healthy body images and beauty. Multipurpose Room, SAC, Feb. 22-26, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Conversation about “The Century Project”: Photographer Frank Cordell will discuss the exhibit. Multipurpose Room, SAC, 6 p.m., Feb. 24.
Panel discussion about “The Century Project”: Louisville’s WAVE 3 personality Dawne Gee will lead a discussion with some of the women Cordell photographed for “The Century Project.” Multipurpose Room, SAC, Feb. 24, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
“Eat Your Way to Happiness”: Author Elizabeth Somer will talk about how dietary changes can help improve mood and energy levels. Feb. 25, two locations. Kornhauser Library, Health Sciences Campus, noon-1 p.m.; Room 101, Strickler Hall, Belknap Campus, 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m.
Your Sexual Body Health Workshop: A Discussion of issues pertaining to sexuality. Room 254, Ekstrom Library, noon-2 p.m.
Feel Good in Your Jeans/Genes: Donate gently used jeans to The Healing Place all week. Collection boxes in some residence halls, SAC, Crawford Gym and Human Resources.
This is the third year CHS has put on BABA Week. CHS, its partners and sponsors launched the program in recognition of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools’ administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins’s child was disciplined for “improper behavior in his home” and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence.
Hell yeah they should be suing. Schools should have no right to discipline or shame children for things that happen off school property.
As if this isn’t disturbing enough the high school in our neighborhood is paperless, doing all their school work on school issued Macs. Looks like in addition to checking for homework, notes and head lice I’ll be keeping a box of band aids to put over the laptop webcam every night. One more reson why you really need to stay involved with your child’s school.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program*
Sponsors: U of L Dept. of Family & Geriatric Medicine, Family Health Centers, Louisville Primary Care Association, YMCA of Greater Louisville, KIPDA, Kentucky Dept. of Public Health – Chronic Disease Prevention Branch
The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is a six-week series of workshops that meet for 2 ½ hours, once a week in community settings such as senior centers, churches, malls and hospitals. People with different chronic health problems attend together: same time, same place, same bunch of people learning and practicing together for six weeks. Workshops are co-facilitated by two people who may or may not be health professionals, one or both of whom have chronic diseases themselves.
Subjects covered include:
Techniques to deal with problems and symptoms associated with chronic conditions such as frustration, fatigue, pain, negative emotions and isolation
Physical activity/movement for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
Appropriate and effective use of medications
Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
Nutrition and supportive food decisions
Evaluating new treatment options
Workshop package is valued at over $150 but the registration fee is only $15, which includes 6 workshops and a resource book called Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions. You may opt to buy the relaxation CD for $5.
PLUS…all participants have access to a FREE 8-week membership to the Greater Louisville YMCA. Must attend minimum of 4 out of the six workshops to qualify.
The way the program is taught is what makes it effective. The workshop sessions are lively and participative; workshop participants talk, share, practice skills and learn together over the six weeks. Mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
The Self-Management Program does not conflict with existing programs or treatment. It is designed to enhance regular treatment and disease-specific education such as Better Breathers, cardiac rehabilitation, or diabetes instruction. In addition, many people have more than one chronic condition. The program is especially helpful for these people, as it gives them the skills to manage their health, as well as to help them keep active in their lives.
Sometimes, no matter how well informed about an issue, or how angry or involved in it you are it is important to stop and ask yourself some questions. Because sometimes failure is not a travesty, but is you, or a good thing, being freed from a bad situation. Just because you have a sale, doesn’t make it a good sale. Just because you have a life partner doesn’t make them a good partner, just because a book is published doesn’t make it a good book. Just because a publisher is prolific, or supportive, or nice, doesn’t make them a good publisher.
So before you unleash teh rage of teh intarnets on something that happened that pissed you off, please step back , evaluate the whole situation, not just the part of it that upsets you, but the whole thing as it originally came into being, and consider if the current situation is really that bad, or if it’s a blessing in disguise.
