Video Game-wise I care more about games than systems. I like the Wii for its uniqueness. I like PS3 for the games it has. I still have an N64 and Game By Advance that I love playing. I still have the original Hexxen, Quake and Gabriel Knight installed on my computer and have on my last 4 computers in a row. I still have a FF7 game and a Monster Rancher game going and I love playing more than finishing.

RGP-wise My favorites are Werewolf:tA/shape shifters, In Nomine and Marvel. I like D&D too, but that depends on who is running. There are few games I haven’t liked at all. Hunter: The Reckoning and the new Gamma World come to mind.

Right now the big one in our house is Wii’s Rayman Raving Rabbids. If for some odd reason you’ve not heard of this series it’s a totally off the wall collection of mini games that you have to win to escape captivity. Here’s an example of the games (which vary from gross to insane to hard as hell)

And at the end of each level is “big game” many of which are twisted versions of the older arcade game Area 51 (did I mention I love shooting games like that?).

It’s probably no surprise then that I love RPGs that are a combo of challenging fights and problem solving (especially with interesting characters). I’m luck enough to know a lot of great GM/Storytellers that each have their own strengths. I think what brings out the best game play is people who love coming up with and running the stories.

RPGs

In Kube’s D&D game (I’m assuming you all have been reading along and know about my preoccupation with this game) my character was best friends with a dryad. We accidentally opened an elder portal after that plot arc was over she chose to go through to the other realm. So we pretty much were saying goodbye forever at that point, and before the party members the dryad was the only friend (not family member) I’d had.

And for balance in the game I’m playing right now (I mean, we’re on break at this very moment) is a Star Wars game and the lone Jedi was forced to watch his mentor be slaughtered. It was a pretty effective scene.

Which game was easy to decide. Which song, however….

Also, this one doesn’t lend to RPGs well, but my friend Kube burned a soundtrack disc for his D&D game. It had everything from the exorcist to Braveheart. When the right song came on at the right time it was neat. Often though it was a point of amusement during the game.

Maybe it’s because I miss the game, and it’s only recently been over, or maybe they really are my favorite, but in the last D&D game I played (3.5) I was Ari, a sun elf fighter perfectionist. I liked the character because she wasn’t snobby but was kick-ass. She was in that coming of age age where she was striking out on her own, from boredom and a desire to push her own boundaries.

My DH played a human monk teen who I had found abandoned in the woods years ago and rescued. To say that the romance between the two was awkward would be an over statement. She still remembered him being a baby. But he could fight as well, if not better than her so she couldn’t deny he was a warrior either. Add on some uncomfy-ness with her own sexuality (and a few in game incidents that made women look weaker for being the “takers” in sex) and yes, there was this beautiful weird tension-frustration thing going on.

So when there was a time jump we decided to make that jump too.
